TEHRAN, Sept 03 -With events moving at a rapid pace in Westminster, nothing appears to be a certainty in this increasingly zero-sum, high stakes political game.

Corby appears determined to contest election despite opposition from within his partyTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -That includes plans for a snap general election in the event that parliament succeeds this week to block Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s bid for a no-deal Brexit.

But to call an early general election, Johnson needs the backing of two-thirds of the House of Commons. The provisions of the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 oblige Johnson to bring the Labour party on board with his plans.

Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has welcomed the prospect of an early general election. Addressing a rally in Salford yesterday, Corbyn said he would be “delighted” at the prospect of an election which “we will win”.

Corbyn told his supporters: “I’m ready for it, you’re ready for it, we’re ready for it”.

But the BBC Assistant Political Editor, Norman Smith, is reporting that the “momentum” inside the Labour Party was “increasingly” against acquiescing to Johnson’s plans for an early election.

Speaking to BBC Newsnight on September 02, Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary, Tony Lloyd, said Labour would vote against government plans to hold a general election before October 31.

Lloyd, who is close to former PM Tony Blair, has in the past opposed Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour party. His public disagreement with Corbyn over a general election comes a day after Blair likened an early election to an “elephant trap”.

Speaking at the Institute of Government, Blair claimed that by mixing up the “Brexit question” with the “Corbyn question”, Johnson has increased his chances of winning a general election.

In the past, Corbyn has consistently overcome opposition from the Labour parliamentary party by relying on the party’s grassroots base.

In order to set the stage for an early election, Corbyn may once again have to mobilise Labour’s rank and file membership.
