TEHRAN, Jul 30 - China urged Washington to end its so-called "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - It also called on the US to avoid making new obstacles for parties to implement the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Ensuring the full and effective implementation of the JCPOA, the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, is both the requirement of UN Security Council resolutions and the only viable and effective approach to resolve the Iran nuclear issue and deescalate tensions, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a press briefing on Monday when asked to comment on a meeting held in Vienna on Sunday, Xinhua reported.
The meeting was held in the Austrian capital to discuss the latest developments around the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers. A Chinese delegation also attended the session.
Hua said the Chinese side called on parties to remain calm and restrained, resolve differences within the framework of the Joint Commission meetings and promote the easing of the current tensions.
At the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to the JCPOA, sought to resolve the issue of Iran's implementation and reiterated their opposition to the US adoption of unilateral sanctions and long-armed jurisdiction to obstruct other countries' implementation of the JCPOA, according to Hua.
In May 2018, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the JCPOA.
Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the JCPOA after the US withdrawal, but the three EU parties to the deal (France, Britain, and Germany) have failed to ensure Iran’s economic interests.
The EU’s inaction forced Tehran to stop honoring certain commitments to the nuclear deal, including a rise in the stockpile of enriched uranium.
Iran maintains that the new measures are not designed to harm the JCPOA but to save the accord by creating a balance in the commitments.
