TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -Announced Monday, the rule would apply "expedited removal" to most of those entering the United States illegally.
"The Trump administration is moving forward into converting ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) into a 'show me your papers' army," said Vanita Gupta, the president of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, on a call with reporters, as cited by Reuters.
Set to be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, the rule could be challenged or locked in a court.
"The effect of that change will be to enhance national security and public safety — while reducing government costs — by facilitating prompt immigration determinations," DHS said in a notice.
The rule would apply to nearly 300,000 of the approximately 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States.
"ICE has been detaining and deporting US citizens for decades," said Jackie Stevens, a political science professor at Northwestern University. "Expedited removal orders are going to make this much worse."
The Republican president has vowed to crack down on immigration but has failed to get his complete agenda through so far.
Despite his relentless focus on a border wall, Trump has so far failed to build one and make Mexico pay for it.
