TEHRAN, Jul 9 - Brexit’s long shadow on Anglo-Irish relations continues to widen as both candidates fighting to become Britain’s next prime minister appear ready to embrace a no-deal Brexit.

Irish premier throws down the gauntlet at the UKTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -The Irish prime minister, Leo Varadkar, has waded into the debate by claiming that there is a “great deal of reluctance” amongst European leaders to grant the UK another Brexit extension.

Reinforcing the same message, the Irish foreign minister, Simon Coveney, says that there is “contingency planning” across all Irish government departments. Writing for the Irish Times, Coveney claims that the chances of a “disorderly Brexit” have never been higher.

British MP’s rejected the deal prime minister Theresa May negotiated with the EU primarily because of the controversial “backstop” clause which is related to the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The backstop is a measure of last resort, to ensure the free flow of goods and people across the highly sensitive Irish border even in the event where both parties cannot agree on a comprehensive deal.

Brexit supporters fear that the backstop could undermine Britain’s “clean” departure from the EU.

The Democratic Unionist Party, the Northern Ireland sectarian group which props up the Tories’ tenuous grip on power, is strongly opposed to the backstop for fear it will threaten Northern Ireland’s position within the United Kingdom.

The uncertainty over the backstop is set to complicate politics within Northern Ireland, in addition to increasing diplomatic and political tension between Britain and the Irish Republic.

It is for this reason that more and more Irish nationalists are beginning to view Brexit as an opportunity to loosen London’s grip on the north and to prepare the grounds for a union with the south.
