TEHRAN, Jun 27 -The scheduled debates between Democratic contenders will feature no “hand size” talks or “silly nicknames,” says the DNC chairman, adding, “we’ll leave that to the Republicans.”

No hand size talk, at Democratic debates: DNC chairmanTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez made the comments Wednesday, referencing the ambience of the 2016 Republican debates, which was replete with nicknames for opponents as well as focus on Donald Trump’s reportedly small hands.

“We’re going to talk about the issues,” Perez told reporters hours before the first of the two debates was about to start. “There will be nobody talking about hand size. There will be nobody talking about silly nicknames for their opponents, we’ll leave that to the Republicans.”

Perez was highlighting the difference between the overcrowded bench of the Democrats in 2020 and the Republicans in 2016.

“I think people want to know what do you stand for, what are you going to fight for and will you fight for the issues that matter to me, and can you defeat Donald Trump?” said the DNC chairman. “Those are the basic issues that voters are going to analyze, that alignment of values and how they square up… People will look for their values and look for evidence of who can take the fight to Donald Trump.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren is considered the most high-profile figure in the Wednesday debate, while the Thursday one will feature former Vice President Joe Biden, Senators Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris as well as South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

The 20 Democratic hopefuls have been lined up in random, something Perez defended against allegations that one night features stronger candidates than the other.

“Not in the least,” Perez said. "We have a deep bench of candidates and this is the sixth mile of the marathon, and who is going to win the marathon? I have no idea… I do know that we have a deep bench of candidates and what we’ll see tonight, tomorrow and next month is the opportunity for everybody around the country to see this deep bench and kick the tires and make the judgment for who they want to support.”

Democrats hope to take the White House back after Hillary Clinton’s 2016 loss and prevent Trump from controlling the White House for another four years.
