Iran Offers Condolences to Ex-Egyptian President Mursi’s Family

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - In a statement on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi expressed regret at the news of death of Mursi, the former and first democratically-elected president of Egypt after victory of a popular uprising in the Arab country.

“With due respect for the views of the great and grown Egyptian nation, the Islamic Republic of Iran offers condolences over the death of Dr. Mohamed Mursi to the people (of Egypt), his family, relatives and fans,” Mousavi said.

He also wished growing success for the great Egyptian nation.

Mursi, imprisoned since he was toppled by the military in 2013, collapsed in a cage during a court session on Monday and died shortly afterward, Egypt's public prosecutor said.

The deceased was a top figure in the Muslim Brotherhood who became Egypt's first freely elected president in 2012, but was overthrown after mass protests against his rule and a coup d'état in July 2013 led by General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
