TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - They were also protesting against a government decision to eliminate compulsory subjects such as history and physical education.
Public school teachers who have been on strike since Monday, chanted and waved banners as they marched along Santiago's main avenue and stopped in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Education.
Hundreds of students joined the protest in support of teachers.
Teachers are calling for, among other things, equality in working conditions, better benefits and the ending of the so-called double evaluation process - which considers both their attendance and their performance.
Teachers are also upset by a recent decision by the authorities to turn the subjects of history and physical education into electives for the students during the last two years of secondary education.
In Chile, over one million students attend free public schools, constituting about 35% of the total number of students.
The rest are educated in private and subsidized private schools.
