TEHRAN, May 28 - The UN’s children fund condemned Saudi airstrikes on a petrol station in the Yemeni city of Taiz on Friday that killed seven kids.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - UNICEF Chief Henrietta Fore said that the children who died were aged between 4 and 14, the official website of UNICEF reported.
The Saudi-led attack in the east of Taiz pushed up confirmed child casualty numbers in the war-torn country to 27 in just over 10 days, according to Fore, who warned that the actual numbers “are likely to be even higher”.
UNICEF confirms that since March 2015, at least 7,300 children have been killed or seriously injured in Yemen as a result of the Saudi-led aggression.
Earlier this month, airstrikes on several neighborhoods in Yemen’s capital Sana’a killed five children and injured dozens more, according to UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), prompting widespread condemnation from OCHA and other UN agencies.
Yemen’s defenseless people have been under massive attacks by a Saudi-led coalition for more than four years but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.
Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.
According to a recent UN report, the combined death toll from the Saudi-led aggression and disease is 233,000, or 0.8 percent of Yemen's 30 million-strong population.
