TEHRAN, May 28-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is implementing probably the smartest strategy politically on impeachment of President Donald Trump where she is “supplying enough rope through investigations that Trump would likely hang himself,” according to Myles Hoenig, an American political analyst and activist.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -Hoenig, a former Green Party candidate for Congress, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Monday while commenting on a tweet of Trump in which he denounced Democratic calls for his impeachment, and called Democrats "Obstructionists."
"The Dems are getting NOTHING done in Congress! They only want a Do-Over on Mueller!" Trump wrote in a post during his four-day state visit to Japan,” he tweeted on Monday from Japan.
"Impeach for what, having created perhaps the greatest Economy in our Country’s history, rebuilding our Military, taking care of our Vets (Choice), Judges, Best Jobs Numbers Ever, and much more?" Trump wrote. "Dems are Obstructionists!"
“The role of Congress has always been one of oversight but also one of payback and retribution,” Hoenig said.
“The impending impeachment of Richard Nixon pretty much scared everyone away from taking such drastic actions, even when warranted. Neither Reagan nor the Bushes were threatened with impeachment, as much as they deserved it for engaging in war crimes, even when authorized by Congress, as it was for Bush Sr. When Clinton was rightfully impeached for lying to a grand jury the floodgates opened up,” he stated.
“Oversight, by way of investigations, hounded the Obama administration, mostly due to the corruption of the Clinton State Department. For many partisan Democrats, this time it’s payback, and who more deservedly so than for Trump? It was Trump, after all, who was the loudest and most brash about questioning Obama’s legitimacy as president, being that he was braying about him being born in Kenya,” he noted.
“Today the Democrats have a two edged sword over Trump. Impeachment can work for and against them. It is their Constitutional obligation to investigate the Executive Branch if it feels that either crimes or improprieties have been committed. It was, and still is, legitimate to question Obama’s Fast and Furious as well as Hillary Clinton funneling arms to ISIS (Daesh) through Libya and the American ambassador, although to protect themselves, the Republicans mostly focused on Ambassador [John Christophe] Stevens’s death and the lack of protection he got,” the analyst said.
“Politically, the attempted removal of the president could also be used against the Democrats in 2020, if the probable happens that Trump is not removed by the Senate, much like Bill Clinton’s good fortune. What Pelosi is doing is probably the smartest strategy politically. She is supplying enough rope through investigations that Trump would likely hang himself, as he seems to be walking up the gallows voluntarily by obstructing Congress’s Constitutional obligations,” he noted.
“Each day Trump engages in juvenile name call, refusing to let people testify, showing himself off as a know-nothing despot, it only increases the likelihood of impeachment as well as even his removal, as eventually, Republicans in both houses could see him as a liability to them in 2020,” he concluded.
