TEHRAN, Apr 27 - UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Friday described the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) as the only transparent instrument of control in this domain, commenting on the US decision to withdraw from the deal.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - "The Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) is the only global instrument aimed at improving transparency and accountability in the international arms trade," the statement reads. "It is a landmark achievement in the efforts to ensure responsibility in international arms transfers."
"This is particularly important in present times, when we witness growing international tensions and renewed interest in expanding and modernizing arsenals," he said
US President Donald Trump said on Friday he would request the US Senate to stop the ratification process of the international agreement, signed by his predecessor Barack Obama. The US leader also announced plans to notify the United Nations about the Washington administration’s refusal to join it.
The ATT is a multinational legally binding document that streamlines the international trade in arms. Its provisions are applicable to conventional weapons, including main battle tanks, armored fighting vehicles, large-caliber artillery systems, warplanes, combat helicopters, warships, missiles and missile systems and firearms.
