TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - The Minnesota Democratic lawmaker in the US House of Representatives, who has been at the center of a controversy over her fight against using the 2001 terrorist attacks as a cudgel against Muslim Americans, is gaining more donations from donors contributing less than $200, Vox reported Wednesday.
Having earned $830,000, half of which came from donors contributing less than $200, Omar is one of the top Democratic earners despite raising only $10,000 from PACs.
Other first-term progressive lawmakers following Omar are New York Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with about $720,000 and Michigan Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-) with about $300,000.
Trump has accused Omar of minimizing the 9/11 attacks by using a sentence from her speech and juxtaposing it with a video of the terrorist attacks.
At some point in her speech, Omar used the sentence “some people did something” to describe the terror attack.
The Muslim congresswoman has been receiving death threats in the wake of her fight against Islamophobia after being accused of anti-Semitism.
Some Democratic 2020 contenders have thrown their support behind the Minnesota lawmaker.
“She won't back down to Trump's racism and hate, and neither will we. The disgusting and dangerous attacks against her must end," US Senator Bernie Sanders said Friday.
