TEHRAN, Apr 06 - Iran's head of football federation was elected as the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Saterday .

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Mahdi Taj , an Iranian candidate for AFC vice-presidency won the place as elected by the AFC confederation vote.

Taj was competing with a candidate of Kyrgyzstan over AFC vice-presidency, yet the Kyrgyz rival withdrew from the competition.

The current head of AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain also remined in his position with the majority of votes in the confederation congress.

He will contiue his career untill 2023 as the chief of AFC as well as a vice president of FIFA.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is the governing body of Asian football and one of the six Confederations making up FIFA.

Formed in 1954 in Manila on the sidelines of the second Asian Games, the AFC was sanctioned by FIFA in Berne, Switzerland on June 21 of that year.

The AFC is now headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and consists of 46 Member Associations and one Associate Member Association (The Northern Mariana Islands).
