Son of California councilwoman fatally shot: Police

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Victor McElhaney, 21, who is a student at the University of Southern California, was fatally shot Sunday in what might have been a robbery attempt near the USC campus.

McElhaney is the son of Oakland Councilwoman Lynette Gibson McElhaney, Zachary Wald, the councilwoman's chief of staff, told the Los Angeles Times.

"I miss my baby. Please keep me, my family, and all of my son's friends in your thoughts and prayers," she said in a statement, mourning her son's death. "We are beginning a new chapter in this reoccurring circle of violence ... And it will take all of us together to make it through this tragedy."

LAPD Officer Mike Lopez said that the victim was approached by three or four men at the corner of Maple Avenue and Adams Boulevard in an apparent robbery attempt and one shot him.

McElhaney was taken to hospital in critical condition, but later was pronounced dead, police said.

Nobody has been arrested as of Sunday afternoon, police added.

This is the second time that McElhaney's family has suffered a tragedy. On Dec. 20, 2015, 17-year-old Torian Hughes, whom the councilwoman helped raise and viewed as a grandson, was slain in a shooting in West Oakland just before Christmas when someone tried to rob him.

Violent crime has hit the USC community in the past too. On July 24, 2014, 24-year-old student Xinran Ji was attacked by a group of four people as he was walking home from a study group near the campus.

He made it back to his apartment, but died before he was found by a roommate.
