Iraqi speaker deplores anti-Iran sanctionsTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Speaking at a joint press conference with Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani in Tehran on Wednesday, Halbousi condemned sanctions against other nations, particularly the unilateral sanctions imposed on the Iranian nation, which he said violate international norms.

The visiting speaker also said he has made it clear for his Iranian counterpart that Iraq will never allow its territories to be used for a military action against neighboring countries.

Halbousi noted that he and Larijani held negotiations on a range of issues, including closer stances between Tehran and Baghdad in international organizations to serve their mutual interests and the necessity for the establishment of stability in Iraq and reconstruction of the Arab country in the post-Daesh era.

“The Iraqi nation’s efforts defeated the (Daesh) terrorist group, however, such an achievement would have been impossible without the help and support provided by the friends of Iraq, particularly by the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he underlined.

For his part, the Iranian speaker highlighted the important position of Iraq in the region, saying he and Halbousi discussed ways to boost economic and parliamentary relations between the two neighbors and to ensure sustainable security in the region.

Larijani added that the issue of Palestine and approaches to supporting the defenseless Palestinians were also discussed in his meeting with Halbousi.

In January, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif paid a visit to Baghdad.

In a press conference with his Iraqi counterpart Mohamed Ali Alhakim, Zarif announced that Iran-Iraq relations are very strong and no one will be allowed to interfere in them.

At the conclusion of the trip, Zarif expressed satisfaction with the results of his “fruitful” visit to Iraq, predicting a very bright future for the political and economic ties between Tehran and Baghdad.
