The boxer thanked his trainer Buddy McGirt for preparing him for the fight. “This training camp, I took carefully with help from my team,” Kovalev told ESPN after his win. “They really helped me. They stopped me from overtraining.”
Kovalev, 35, lost his WBO and IBA light heavyweight titles in August when Alvarez defeated him by technical knockout.
Nicknamed the ‘Krusher’, the Russian boxer has held multiple WBA, IBF, and WBO titles over the years. He now has 33 wins, including 28 by knockout, three losses, and one draw.
The days leading up the fight were marred by controversy for Kovalev. American actress and model Jamie Frontz accused the boxer of assault and punching her in the face. In response, Kovalev asked everyone not to make “hasty conclusions,” calling the allegations “a performance in which I play the main role against my will.”
