TEHRAN, Jan 29 - NATO Secretary General says the Alliance's forces will keep their presence in Afghanistan unless they manage to maintain peace in the country.

NATO withdrawal of Afghanistan in limbo: Stoltenberg

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Jens Stoltenberg said that it is "too early to speculate" on the issue of withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan, for he believes it is necessary to support efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.

"We strongly support those efforts… We are in close contact with the United States… Our military presence, the purpose of that is to create the conditions for the political solution, and we hope that we will be able to achieve that", Stoltenberg noted.

The United States has nearly 14,000 troops in Afghanistan as part of the US-led NATO mission, known as Resolute Support.

Despite the presence of US-led forces in Afghanistan 17 years after they invaded the country to drive Taliban from power, the militant group controls nearly half of the country.

President Ghani said last week that 45,000 members of the country’s security forces had been killed since he took office in 2014.
