TEHRAN, Jan 27 - Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned twin bomb blasts at a church in the southern Philippine island of Jolo that killed over a dozen people.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - In a statement on Sunday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi condemned the bomb attack on a Roman Catholic cathedral in the Philippines, expressing condolences to the Filipino government and nation and families of the victims.
“Resorting to violent methods, whose main victims are innocent people, is hated and rejected, no matter where it happens,” the Iranian spokesman added.
Over a dozen people were killed in two bomb blasts at a Roman Catholic cathedral on the Philippines’ island of Jolo.
Police said Sunday's incident claimed the lives of at least 15 civilians and five soldiers, adding that 77 others were injured.
The first bomb went off in or near the cathedral of Jolo, the capital of Sulu province, followed by a second blast outside the compound as government forces were responding to the attack, security officials said.
President Rodrigo Duterte's Spokesman Salvador Panelo condemned the "act of terrorism" and vowed that government forces will pursue the perpetrators of the attack.
In a separate statement, the Philippine Army said the explosions were likely caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
