Yellow Vest rally enters 11th week

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Clashing with the protesters who gathered in the Place de la Republique, the police used tear gas.

Yellow Vest movement leader Jerome Rodriguez, an associate of the movement's founder Eric Drouet, sustained an eye injury in clashes at the Place de la Bastille in Paris as a result of which he may lose his eye.

France Info broadcaster reported that about 69,000 people took part in Yellow Vest rallies across France on Saturday, including 4,000 protesters in Paris alone. Last week, 84,000 protesters participated in the rallies in the country with 7,000 in the capital.

The “Yellow Vest” movement initially erupted in November 2018 amid public outrage over a planned hike in fuel prices. The embattled French president later backed down and suspended the increase, but the protests did not stop and turned into a broader campaign against high costs of living blamed on Macron’s economic policies.

Many of the protesters are demanding the resignation of Macron, a demand dismissed as undemocratic by the government.

The Yellow Vest protests has entered its eleventh week widely in France still with the French security forces suppressing the protesters.
