The Shahdad Prefect in interview with Mehr News Agency said "Placed by the earth’s hottest spot, the Shahdad Desert is covered with snow for the first time ever.”

Mohammad Momeni added "The snowfall started yesterday to cover the entire Shahdad country for the first time.”

The official further said "I talked to the citizens the eldest of whom was 80. They said that in their life they have not seen snow in the area, especially the Shahdad yardangs.”

He added that the snow has amounted to 4 centimeters in depth.

Momeni also reported that 7 non-Iranian tourists who had been stuck in the snow during their visit to the plains were saved by local rescue groups.
