TEHRAN, December 31 - Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri said the “humiliating” withdrawal of American forces from Syria will definitely improve security in the region.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - “The US pullout from Syria is a humiliating withdrawal from a country without the permission of whose people and legitimate government they (the US) had entered,” Major General Baqeri told reporters in Iran’s southern port city of Bandar Abbas on Sunday.
He also noted that the US exit from Syria would have no impact on defense and security missions in the region, adding, “Wherever Americans have been present, they caused insecurity, and the (US) exit from Syria and other parts of the region will lead to enhanced security and calm in the region.”
The top general also pointed to the security conditions in the Persian Gulf, stressing that regional countries alone can ensure security of the Persian Gulf. “The US presence in the region would bring nothing to the region but insecurity.”
Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump ordered all of the US forces in Syria to withdraw from the country.
The US began its air campaign in Syria in 2014, deploying troops to the country to purportedly assist in the fight against terrorism.
Reports have suggested US forces will leave within 60 to 100 days.
