TEHRAN, December 30 - The mass rallies held on the ninth day of the Persian calendar month of Dey in 2009 dashed the United States’ hopes to destroy the bonds between the Iranian nation and the government, says a political commentator.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - “The United States has come to realize pretty well and deep that as long as there are strong bonds between the nation and the state, they may not topple the Islamic Republic, they may not wear off the power of Iran and thus they have been doing their best in order to misuse any kind of situation or opportunity that may arise in order to strike at these bonds,” Mostafa Khoshcheshm told Press TV in an interview on Sunday.
“The same happened in 2009 when there were street protests about election results … First they tried to escalate the situation in order to push the country into further and rioting more than ever in order to strike at Iran’s security in the hope that they could eventually overthrow the Islamic Republic. At the same time they were using these protests as ground in order to justify crippling sanctions against the Iranian nation and further in the process they hoped that through these sanctions they could lay pressure on the lower strata of the society in order to reinvigorate the protests against the state.
So the United States had pinned much hope on those protests and when the rallies in support of the Islamic establishment started on such a day –December 30, 2009- all those hopes of the United States were ditched,” he added.
Iranians have taken to the streets to mark the anniversary of 2009 historic rallies, during which people renewed their allegiance to the Islamic establishment and put an end to foreign-orchestrated riots.
On this day in 2009, millions of Iranians rallied in the capital Tehran and other cities to end what the Iranian authorities described as "sedition" which had been going on for months following presidential elections earlier that year.
The unrest in 2009 was orchestrated by Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Musavi, two of the candidates who had lost the election, claiming that the results had been rigged.
Both remain under house arrest on charges of provoking the public and harming the national security.
Speaking on Sunday, Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani highlighted foreign meddling, especially by the US, in the 2009 post-election riots.
