TEHRAN, September 01 - Eight people have been injured in a blaze at an oil refinery in Bavaria while another 1,800 people living close by have been temporarily evacuated.

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Police said on Saturday the fire spread quickly after a loud detonation was heard early in the southern German town of Vohburg an der Donau. "Shortly after 5 a.m. (0300 GMT) this morning there was an explosion here in a refinery near Vohburg," said police spokesman Hans Peter Kammerer.

A huge smoke cloud could be seen miles away. Residents were evacuated because of possibly toxic smokes. Air tests later showed it was safe for people to return to their homes.

The German news agency dpa reported all eight injured were Bayernoil refinery employees. "About 500 emergency forces, mainly firefighters of course, are involved here with the extinguishing of the fire caused by this explosion," said Kammerer.

Joachim Herrmann, the Bavarian interior minister, said "the material damage is immense." Authorities said the cause of the explosion was not known.
