TEHRAN, August 28 - British Prime Minister Theresa May has brushed aside claims that she might step down over criticisms about her fragile Brexit policy, saying she would fight off a possible leadership bid by former foreign minister Boris Johnson in an upcoming Conservative Party conference.

UK PM vows to fight off any leadership challengeTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -“I am in this for the long term. I am in this for delivering for the British people, and that’s what I’m focused on,” said May on Tuesday while speaking to reporters in Cape Town, South Africa.

May said she would present some new plans that could appeal to the voters in the next month’s Conservative party conference in Birmingham.

She said those plans will more focus on “the domestic agenda”, elaborating that they include plans “to actively increase house-building so young people have an opportunity to get their feet on to the housing ladder, when so many fear they are not going to be able to do that”.

Asked specifically about Johnson’s potential leadership bid in Birmingham conference, May said she hoped to fight on as prime minister.

Johnson, a former mayor of London and a highly influential figure in the Leave campaign before the 2016 Brexit referendum, resigned from May’s cabinet along another senior minister in early July after the prime minister announced her final plan of action for talks with the EU on how Britain will leave the bloc in March next year.

Johnson protested against the plan, saying it would make the United Kingdom a colony of the EU. His criticism of the government’s Brexit strategy has been viewed as a serious threat to May with many anticipating Johnson would replace May if the incumbent leader fails on her promises to deliver a smooth Brexit.
