650 Pages, 284 accounts killed in Free Flow of Information

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Facebook’s Zuckeberg claimed that the networks of accounts identified as misleading people about what they were doing, according AFP.

The removed accounts were accused of having coordinated inauthentic behavior as well as being tied to Iran and Russia.

“Today we removed multiple Pages, groups and accounts for coordinated inauthentic behavior on Facebook and Instagram. Some of this activity originated in Iran, and some originated in Russia,” the California-based company announced in a post on Tuesday.

A social media titan Twitter also said in a statement that it removed more than 280 accounts for coordinated manipulation including a number that originated from Iran.

"Working with our industry peers today, we have suspended 284 accounts from Twitter for engaging in coordinated manipulation" the release said on Tuesday.

The social media company also says it appears many of these accounts originated from Iran.

Facebook said it had worked closely with law enforcement in both the US and the UK on the investigation, and had briefed the US Treasury Department and State Department as Washington has imposed sanctions on Tehran.

Iranian and Russian officials have not yet commented on the reports.

Earlier this year, Facebook was itself hit by an election-related scandal after it was revealed the data of up to 87 million of its users had been improperly shared with the political consultancy, Cambridge Analytica, which was hired by Trump in 2016 to predict and influence voters’ choices at the ballot box.
