TEHRAN, August 14 - Iran’s ambassador to Vienna-based international organizations, Kazem Gharibabadi, held separate talks with high-ranking Brazilian envoys about ways to deepen mutual cooperation within the framework of the UN.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - In the meeting in the Austrian capital on Monday, the two sides praised relations between the Iranian and Brazilian missions in Vienna as “good and constructive” and stressed the need to continue consultations on various topics and boost cooperation in the international organizations.
Gharibabadi pointed to the history of cooperation between the Islamic Republic and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and praised Brasilia’s stance on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.
He further denounced the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as “unilateral and illegal” and highlighted Washington’s contradictory statements on talks with Iran.
During the meeting, the Brazilian ambassadors to Vienna emphasized that their country defends and believes in values and principles regarding the JCPOA. They also underlined that their country defends multilateralism and pragmatism in its foreign policy.
In a statement on August 6, the US president said his country’s policy is to levy "maximum economic pressure" on Iran.
Donald Trump further said Washington is urging all nations "to make clear that the Iranian regime faces a choice: either change its threatening, destabilizing behavior and reintegrate with the global economy or continue down a path of economic isolation.”
On May 8, Trump pulled his country out of the JCPOA, which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
Following the US exit, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the accord.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has underlined that any decision to keep the JCPOA running without the US should be conditional on “practical guarantees” from the Europeans.
