TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -With just three months left until what are considered tremendously important midterm elections, candidates for the House and Senate are spending at a historic rate.
Federal Election Commission filings and data collected and processed by the Center for Responsive Politics show the 2018 campaigns are on pace to be the most expensive in history.
The totals include all candidates who have run for legislative office to date, including those who failed to advance beyond their respective primaries. It does not include gubernatorial races, which don't have to file campaign finance reports with the FEC.
In three months, the grand total may be over $2 billion. Center for Responsive Politics Executive Director Sheila Krumholz told UPI candidates historically raise 40 percent of their total funds in their campaigns' final months -- meaning there's more to come.
"At this pace we're looking at a cycle for House candidates alone, in terms of receipts, that's well ahead of any prior cycle," Krumholz said.
