TEHRAN, July 22 -The US Defense Department has been reportedly caught off guard by reports of military agreements between President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, during their recent meeting in Finland.

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Russia has touted Monday's summit between Trump and Putin in the Finnish capital Helsinki as a success, hailing "verbal agreements" regarding increased cooperation on international security matters such as Ukraine and Syria.

“The Russian Defense Ministry is ready for practical implementation of the agreements in the sphere of international security reached by Russian and US Presidents, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, at their Monday’s summit in Helsinki," said Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the ministry.

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has kept a low profile since the summit, just as he stayed off the radar throughout Trump's chaotic European tour that led to the meeting and saw Trump bash NATO members during a summit in Brussels and undermine the British government during a visit to the UK.

Trump said during the NATO summit that the military alliance was not investing enough money in defense and the US was bearing the brunt of the costs.

He even said he would call back US troops from Europe if the trend continues, causing an uproar among allies.

The silence in the Pentagon’s higher ranks has trickled down, where press officials have spent the week trying to answer questions on Trump and Putin’s discussion and the potential military agreements that Moscow is speaking about.

The head of US Central Command, General Joseph Votel, who oversees the US-led campaign against purported Daesh positions in Syria and Iraq, told reporters Thursday that he had received no new guidance on the operation since the summit.

“For us right now it’s kind of steady as she goes,” he said. “We have received no further direction than we’ve currently been operating under."

Trump administration officials are also trying to find out what agreements, if any, Trump and Putin have reached during their private meeting that stretched over two hours.
