TEHRAN, July 05 - The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Austria signed four cooperation documents to enhance their bilateral ties in various fields, including renewable energies.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - The cooperation agreements were signed late on Wednesday in the presence of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.
Senior officials of the two countries signed the documents in the fields of transportation, water resources management, renewable energies and mining.
Following the signing ceremony, Rouhani said, “Good agreements and contracts have been signed between Iran and Austria (that would lead to) deepened Tehran-Vienna economic relations”.
He added, “It is important that the government of Austria support its companies’ business in Iran. The unlawful action of the US administration in withdrawing from the nuclear deal mustn’t lay the groundwork for ignoring the rights of nations in bilateral or multilateral relations”.
Rouhani arrived in Vienna on Tuesday on the second leg of his tour of Europe, which had already taken him to Switzerland.
The Iranian president has enhanced political contacts with foreign leaders on the ways to save the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) after the US exit.
“The JCPOA is the achievement by all of us and the global community. This agreement is beneficial for economy, stability and security of the region and the world and a model for resolving complicated issues through dialogue,” Rouhani added.
He also said that the nuclear deal was the result of 12 years of breath-taking negotiations and its cancellation means the end of diplomacy, adding, “Currently, we are waiting for European countries’ package on how to save the deal”.
“If EU can fill in for US commitments made in the deal, Iran will stay in it. Resolution 2231 of the United Nations Security Council, as the backing document, emphasizes that none of signatories of the JCPOA should do anything against the provisions of the agreement”.
Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurz, for his part, described Rouhani’s visit to Vienna as a good opportunity to hold dialogue on bilateral, regional and global ties and said, “EU still supports the nuclear deal”.
On May 8, the US president pulled his country out of the JCPOA, which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
Following the US exit, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the accord.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has underlined that any decision to keep the JCPOA running without the US should be conditional on “practical guarantees” from the Europeans.
