TEHRAN, June 26 -German Chancellor Angela Merkel has indicated that the European Union is yet far from reaching a comprehensive agreement on how to handle a new refugee crisis in the continent.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - “There will be no solution for the whole asylum package i.e. for all seven directives, by Friday,” Merkel said Tuesday while referring to new proposals for a more coordinated refugee policy in the 28-member EU.
The German chancellor said that the EU still needed more debate and work on two directives from the news policy package, adding, however, that the stalled process would not stop her from seeking bilateral agreements with EU countries on relocation of refugees.
“For this reason I spoke about working with countries that are willing on all dimensions of the migration policy,” she said.
Merkel was speaking in a news conference with visiting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who has pushed refugee issue up his agenda. Days after coming to power earlier this month, Sanchez ordered border authorities to accept a stranded refugee boat in the Mediterranean. The Aquarius, a French NGO boat carrying 629 refugees had been blocked from docking in Italy and Malta.
