TEHRAN, May 29 - In a tweet at the conclusion of his trip to New Delhi, Zarif said the “fruitful” visit was based upon the achievements of President Hassan Rouhani's state visit to India back in February.

Zarif hails India visit results

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - “Productive meetings (were held) on energy, banking, transportation and commerce. Excellent substantive concluding meeting with my counterpart and delegations. Resolved to expand ties in all fields,” the Iranian diplomat wrote.

In a meeting earlier in the day, Zarif and his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj discussed various regional and international issues.

During the Monday talks, Swaraj highlighted the significance of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and voiced her country’s strong support for the efforts to preserve the nuclear deal.

Zarif, for his part, praised the close bilateral ties between Iran and India, saying the leadership of the two sides have made good agreements on promotion of economic relations.

In comments before meeting Zarif, the Indian foreign minister had announced that her country would abide only by the sanctions imposed by the United Nations, not by those imposed by any other country, such as the US sanctions against Iran.

"India follows only UN sanctions, and not unilateral sanctions by any country," she said at a news conference.

India is one of the major customers of Iranian oil, and has also made investment in Iran’s gas and oil industry.

While the US president pulled his country out of the JCPOA on May 8 and announced the imposition of new sanctions against Iran, the other parties to the nuclear deal (Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany) have opposed the decision, voicing resolve to maintain the accord and secure Iran’s economic interests.
