TEHRAN, May 24 - The Iran women’s national under-17 volleyball team has not managed to book a place at the semifinal round of the 12th edition of Asian Women’s U17 Volleyball Championship in Thailand, after falling to title-holding Japan in the quarterfinals.

Japan beats Iran with straight sets in Asian Women’s U17 Volleyball ChampionshipTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - On Thursday, the Japanese outfit sealed an emphatic win by defeating Iran 3-0 (25-12, 25-17 and 25-16) in a match played at the Nakhon Pathom Municipality Gymnasium in the central Thai city of Nakhon Pathom.

Japanese volleyball players looked confident and strong-minded as they came out on the court. They slammed fine spikes and blocked the ball well as their Iranian counterparts were battling to garner points.

The Iranians then made well-taken attempts to narrow the deficit. The young Japanese sportswomen, in return, availed themselves of the Iranians’ individual mistakes to surge ahead, and finally closed out the first set at 25-12.

The Japanese team powered through the second set, despite Iran’s efforts to reverse the course, and won it 25-17 at the end.

Even though the Iranian volleyball players put up defense in the third set, their Japanese opponents took up available opportunities, and finished the set 25-16.

Iran defeated Malaysia 3-1 (25-27, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-21) on Wednesday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

“I am satisfied with the way my players played in this match. We have come here to learn and I think this competition is a great opportunity for my girls to learn more,” Iran’s coach Mitra Shabanian commented after the match.

She added, “I have never thought before that the match would be that tough. Malaysia played well and they proved that which team are stronger and should qualify for the quarter-finals. We next play Japan. They are a strong team and one of the favorites to win gold medal at this championship. We will try our best.”
