TEHRAN, May 20 - Royal weddings just like many other practices by the British elite are “monstrous lies” that are supposed to deceive the public, says a British scholar.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Dr. Rodney Shakespeare, a London-based university professor and political analyst, made the remarks discussing the wedding between Prince Harry and US actress Meghan Markle.
More than 2,000 members of the public attended the ceremony in the streets of Windsor in England on Saturday.
The wedding has been estimated to cost British taxpayers a staggering $45 million (£32 million) by wedding planning service Bridebook and American news website Business Insider.
“A royal wedding is part of the apparatus by which the critical elite ensures that the population is kept away from reality,” Shakespeare told Press TV on Sunday.
The academic said the wedding was another “monstrous lie” London had fed to the public, just like the alleged gas attack in Syria that was recently used by the UK, the US and France to attack the Arab country.
The wedding comes as the country is facing multiple crises, including a sharp rise in the number of rough sleepers.
About 1,000 protesters arrived Friday in Windsor on the eve of the wedding to take part in a rally aimed at raising awareness of homelessness in Britain.
“The government ensures that people are in a state of illusion and a state of deception and they are being assured at the same time that all is well and as in the fairytales everything end happily ever after,” Shakespeare argued.
“And that is what lies behind the propaganda machine of a royal wedding,” he said adding that in reality “the government is betraying the interests of the mass of the population and betraying anybody else as well.”
Many Britons are upset about the huge money involved in the ceremony, specially for maintaining security by snipers, undercover police, military technology, and security drones.
A recent YouGov poll showed 57 percent of respondents wanted the royal family to pay for such costs.
