TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - The official Palestinian news agency Wafa said Sunday that Abbas, 82, was first taken to hospital late on Saturday and was discharged in early hours of Sunday.
It cited an official from the Palestinian Authority (PA), the administration governed by Abbas, as saying that the Palestinian leader was again hospitalized later on Sunday after his temperature rose.
“so doctors advised that he go back into hospital,” said the official without elaborating.
Abbas went to hospital Tuesday to have a minor surgery in his middle ear. Wafa said in a first statement early on Sunday that he was hospitalized in al-Istishari hospital in Ramallah “for a checkup to review the surgery,” adding that Abbas left the facility after results of the tests “turned out to be excellent.”
A later statement by the news agency on Sunday afternoon and during Abba’s second spell at the hospital cited head of the al-Istishari hospital Dr. Saed Sarahneh as saying that the Palestinian leader was in “reassuring” medical conditions.
Other sources said the high temperature that caused Abbas to remain in hospital may have resulted from a failure of an ear inflammation to heal completely.
Abbas has served as the PA president since the death of Yasser Arafat in 2004. His administration rules the West Bank but represents all Palestinians, including those in the Gaza Strip, internationally.
Abbas was hospitalized for medical checks during a February trip to the United States to address the UN Security Council in New York.
His ailing condition comes amid some tough times for the Palestinians. Some 100 people have been killed by Israel in renewed clashes on Gaza’s border which intensified after the United States moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds last week. Abbas has fiercely contested the move while pursuing a case in the United Nations Security Council to condemn the Israeli killings as war crime.
