TEHRAN, May 16 - Iran’s Foreign Ministry slammed the fresh anti-Iran US sanctions, including one against the Central Bank of Iran’s governor, as an attempt to make up for its wrong and internationally criticized move to walk away from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - In a statement on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi condemned the US Treasury Department’s sanction on Iran’s Central Bank Governor Valiollah Seif as part of the “irrational and hostile policies of the US government against the Iranian nation.”

The US imposition of new sanctions on Iran amid the negotiations between Iran and Europe on saving the JCPAO without the US “clearly demonstrates that the United States of America has failed to achieve its anti-Iran targets with the unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA,” he added.

After the grave mistake of scrapping the nuclear deal and facing a failure, the US is trying to resort to such “destructive moves” in order to undermine the will of the other parties to the JCPOA, Qassemi added.

He went on to say that the international reaction to the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal shows how such an illogical move by the US president –which is in violation of the international law- has damaged the US government’s credibility and isolated it.

On Tuesday, the US imposed sanctions on Seif and an Iraq-based bank for what it called “moving millions of dollars” for the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin accused Iran’s Central Bank chief of covertly funneling money on behalf of the IRGC.

The sanction came days after US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the JCPOA.

Iran and the remaining parties -Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany- have launched negotiations to save the nuclear agreement in such a way that Tehran’s benefits from the deal are secured.
