TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel is criticizing President Trump’s decision to pull the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal, saying it “undermines trust in the international order.”
Merkel made the comment while addressing an audience at a Catholic conference in Muenster, according to Tass.
“I believe it is wrong to unilaterally tear up the agreement, which was agreed on and which was unanimously approved by the U.N. Security Council," Merkel said.
Merkel, along with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May, has criticized Trump for pulling the U.S. out of the agreement and vowing to reinstate economic sanctions on Iran.
The trio released a joint statement after Trump’s announcement saying they would stay in the Obama-era agreement, which is aimed at preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
On Thursday, Merkel said Europe can no longer count on the U.S. to protect it.
“It is no longer such that the United States simply protects us, but Europe must take its destiny in its own hands. That's the task of the future," she said.
