TEHRAN, May 11 - President of the Iranian Canadian Congress said the strong opposition of the Canadian senators to Iran sanctions is a big victory for the supporters of dialogue, peace and restoration of relations between the two countries.

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) – Speaking to Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Bijan Ahmadi said, 'the Iranian Canadian Congress has been the most active non-governmental organization in lobbying against the S-219 bill.

Following the announcement of the US withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal on Tuesday by President Donald Trump, the Canadian Senator Linda Frum called for an emergency voting on the anti Iran bill.

The bill was rejected by 44-33 votes on Wednesday.

Canada suspended all diplomatic ties with Iran in September 2012.

Commenting on Trump's decision, Ahmadi said, 'At this sensitive time when Trump's team has chosen to violate Iran's nuclear deal and is pursuing a policy that may lead to disastrous crisis in the region, Canada and its European allies should engage Iran to preserve the nuclear deal.'

Saying that the only way to save the peace and stability in the region is to establish a constructive relation, he said, 'I would like to appreciate, on behalf of Iranian Canadian Congress, all the Senators who voted against the bill S-219.'

The nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed by Iran and the major world powers in 2015. Under the deal Iran agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange of economic sanctions relief.

The other signatories to the deal—UK, France, Russia, China and Germany—have said that they will continue to enforce the deal.
