TEHRAN, May 9 - Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel on Tuesday night denounced U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) – "No #IranDeal means more instability or war in the Middle East. I deeply regret the withdrawal by @realDonaldTrump from #JCPOA," Michel wrote in a tweet.
The EU and its international partners must remain committed and Iran must continue to fulfill its obligations, he continued.
The landmark Iran deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was struck between Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council -- China, France, Russia, Britain and the U.S. -- plus Germany and the EU, in Vienna in 2015.
Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Didier Reynders also denounced the U.S. decision.
"We regret the decision by the #US to withdraw from the #IranNuclearDeal#JCPOA. We will consult with our #EU partners on how to keep #Iran committed not to develop nuclear weapons & to preserve regional stability."
President of Belgium's Socialist Party and former Prime Minister, Elio Di Rupo, deplored Trump's abrupt decision to call off the deal with Iran.
"I strongly condemn Trump's unilateral decision, which is irresponsible and could lead us into a period of global instability, and I call on Europeans so that they can, without delay, establish contacts with Iran in order to avoid a conflagration of the situation," wrote the former prime minister on Twitter.
Trump announced at the White House that the U.S. will withdraw from the landmark 2015 accord.
