TEHRAN, May 8 - Almost two-thirds of Americans believe that the United States should not withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, with hours to go until US President Donald Trump decides whether to keep Washington in the international agreement.

Majority of Americans believe US should stay in Iran nuclear dealTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) – According to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, 63 percent of Americans believe Trump should stay in the deal while only 29 percent say he should withdraw.

In a tweet on Monday, US President Donald Trump said he will announce whether Washington will pull out of the Iran nuclear deal on Tuesday afternoon.

Trump has threatened to withdraw from the nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). It was signed between Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – the United States, France, Britain, Russia and China – plus Germany in July 2015.

Fifty-one percent of Republicans say the US should withdraw and 46 percent of them approve of the job Trump is doing.

Meanwhile, 75 percent say Iran is either "a very serious threat" or "a moderately serious threat.”

Last week, public support for the Iran deal reached its highest point previously recorded.

Fifty-six percent of people polled in the Morning Consult/Politico survey backed the nuclear deal, while 26 percent opposed it. The poll was conducted online April 26 to May 1 among 1,991 registered voters.

The US is to formally decide on the issue on May 12 as European allies of the United States, particularly the UK, are reportedly trying to convince the president to stay in the deal backed by five other world powers.

The European Union, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany have expressed support for the deal in the wake of new anti-Iran claims by Israel.

Iran has on numerous occasions asserted that its nuclear program is merely peaceful and not meant to make nukes.
