Tehran, YJC. Lawmaker says that the new US approach to Iran is the old one, only with some more carrot than stick.
Deputy
Speaker of the Majlis and Secretary General of the Islamic Society of Engineers
criticizing hasty approvals and objections to recent developments in Iran-US
relations said "The US policy is the old carrot and stick policy. They have
just changed it a little by gauging down the stick and up the carrot.”
Speaking
in the Islamic Society of Engineers’ monthly meeting, Mohammadreza Bahonar
pointed to Rouhani's recent visit to New York and said "There will be various
evaluations, which usually come at extremes. Some will get upset and some
overjoyed. It is to regret that we scarcely analyze things with justice and
wisdom.”
Maintaining
that after 34 years, Iran-US negotiations are to be considered as an important
event, he stated "The fact that the White House has said that Obama would like
to meet with Iranian officials is a very important thing. Iran turned a cold
shoulder to the meeting for various reasons. In the international language, a
meeting by the majors must come as the result of meetings by lesser officials.”
"It was natural for Iran to call off the meeting
under such shortage of time,” Bahonar pointed out, adding "The meeting of the Iran
and US foreign ministers was very important. Also the Foreign Minister’s meeting
with the Six Powers was another important event which clarified the future
meetings of the group.”
The
Deputy Speaker of the Majlis stated that the US approach is still the old
carrot and stick policy, adding "For reasons they know well, Americans changed
this policy a bit by gauging the stick down and the carrot up.”
