TEHRAN, March 12 -Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák announced Monday he would resign, amid a political crisis following the murder of investigative reporter Ján Kuciak.
TEHRAN,Young Journalists Club (YJC) - “It’s important for stability to be maintained, therefore I decided to resign the post of deputy prime minister and interior minister,” Kaliňák, a close ally of Prime Minister Robert Fico, said Monday, according to local media.
“I will do much more for the investigators and their ability to work in peace if I resign,” he added. “My chair has never been important to me. The important thing is that we put the murderers in front of court.”
Kuciak’s murder last month provoked a political crisis in the country, with members of the ruling party junior coalition partner, Most-Hiíd, calling for the removal of Kaliňák.
Thousands of people also marched in Bratislava and a host of Slovak towns last week, calling for the resignation of key members of Fico’s government.
Three other Slovakian officials have resigned in the wake of Kuciak’s murder: Slovakian Culture Minister Marek Maďarič, as well as two people named in a draft of the reporter’s final story, chief state adviser Mária Trošková and chair of Slovakia’s security council Viliam Jasaň.
Kuciak was investigating links between Italian mafia group ‘Ndrangheta and businessmen in Slovakia at the time of his death. The unfinished story was published online posthumously.
