TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -US President Donald Trump has given Russia a “green light” to get engaged in the processes of meddling in the country ahead of upcoming US elections, says a former CIA analyst.
Former National Security Council spokesman Ned Price accused Trump of having failed to deal with Russia in the wake of alleged intervention in the 2016 presidential election in an appearance on MSNBC on Tuesday.
“We have heard that President Trump has personally himself done absolutely nothing to help our national security establishment and infrastructure stop the next round of Russian meddling. That should be hugely troubling to all of us,” he said.
An investigation has been launched to find out whether the Russian government coordinated with Trump’s aides after the intelligence community’s conclusion that the Kremlin helped with the New York billionaire’s campaign effort ahead of winning the White House, an allegation dismissed both by Moscow and the president.
“Both what he has done and has not done, are very clear signals to Moscow - a clear signal that they have the green light to continue,” Price said.
Last month, Trump refused to implement sanctions against Russia over its alleged interference in the 2016 elections, arguing that merely authorizing the sanctions is already “serving as a deterrent” against the Kremlin.
Price’s comments came amid concerns that Moscow is planning to also intervene in the upcoming midterms.
All 435 seats in the United States House of Representatives and 34 of the 100 seats in the United States Senate will be at stake, when midterm elections are held in the middle of Trump's term in early November 2018.
