TEHRAN, January 30 - The increasing rat population in the Iranian capital, Tehran, has become a headache for the municipal authorities.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Officials are applying integrative techniques to battle the rodents. Municipal workers are patrolling Tehran’s streets at night, looking out for rats on the run and targeting them with their rifles.
Tehran's Urban Animal Control Department is in charge of the rat extermination. Fighting urban animals costs about 4 million US dollars annually.
Authorities say Tehran’s rat population is up to two millions. Some of them are the size of a young cat. The rat control plan first rolled out in 1984. The initiative has continued to date in 22 municipal districts of Tehran.
