Tehran, YJC. Analyst says that the new proposed Foreign Minister strengthens the odds of Iran-US talks.
The
international relations professor Davoud Hermidas Bavand said in an interview
regarding Rouhani's proposal of Mohammadjavad Zarif as the minister of Foreign
Affairs "Proposing Javad Zarif as the Minister of Foreign Affairs implies the
chances of talks with the US and an exit from the impasse, even if there has
been no intention.”
"Mr.
Zarif is a knowledgeable person who has studied in the US. He is an insightful
person, well acquainted with US diplomacy, who has headed the Iranian delegation
to the UN. He would be invited to US circles in relation to the events that
have occurred in Iran. He has reflected Iran’s positions in the US Congress. He
is expert and suitable enough to adopt the position,” the international affairs
analyst added.
"Zarif’s
success in pursuing matters will depend on the amount of privilege he is given
as a representative,” Bavand maintained.
He pointed
out that both Rouhani and Zarif have had the experience of holding negotiations
with three European foreign ministers, adding "Rouhani must have extensive
authorizations, as a result of which his representatives, including Zarif, should
also enjoy the privileges in order to be effective in furthering the country’s
affairs.”
