French president says considering Iran visit

TEHRAN, October 14 - French President Emmanuel Macron has said he is considering a visit to Iran at the invitation by his Iranian counterpart President Hassan Rouhani.

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Macron's decision to visit Iran was announced after holding a phone conversation with President Rouhani Friday evening, France's Elysee Presidential Office wrote on its website.

This is while, US President Donald Trump affronting international efforts that led to signing of the Iran nuclear deal, said on Friday that, he was going to decertify the international agreement with Tehran.

According to the Elysee website, Macron told the Iranian President that France remained committed to the 2015 nuclear agreement which, besides the United States, was also negotiated with Britain, China, Russia and Germany.

Meanwhile, the Iranian President, during his telephone conversation with Macron, referred to Washington's new stance and also Macron's focus on EU and Paris support for the nuclear deal, saying International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the only body to verify Iran's commitment to the deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Macron’s visit to Iran would be the first by a French head of state or government since 1971. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian is set to travel to the Iran in the next few weeks.
