TEHRAN, October 9 - An analyst believes the United States is seeking to corner Iran in an attempt to provoke a “strong reaction” from the Islamic Republic so that it could then “justify its own belligerence”.

US provoking Iran to justify own belligerence: AnalystTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - “For months now I think that [US President] Donald Trump and the entire war complex that he now seems to be representing has done everything that it possibly could to lock Iran into a clash course against the US military complex. It is trying very hard to ensure that there is enough antagonism against Iran and enough hatred and enough propaganda weaved around the idea of Iran’s system of governance, its people, its military, its security apparatus, that it can then justify its own hatred so that it could eventually accomplish its agenda within the Islamic world,” Catherine Shakdam Director, Shafaqna Institute of Middle Eastern Studies told PressTV in an interview on Monday.

“We have to understand that this sudden hatred towards for example the nuclear deal or even Iran itself now is actually linked to Iran’s progress in combating terrorism in Syria, in Iraq and actually promoting sovereignty in Yemen, in Lebanon and other countries in the world, trying to promote political self-determination for people. We have to understand that those two are linked and explain the why of America’s hatred and antagonism towards Iran,” she added.

This came after reports that Trump is expected to announce new measures against Iran, including the prospect of additional targeted sanctions and the designation of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
