Tehran, YJC. The Foreign Ministry says that the presence of the Iranian Navy in the Caspian Sea is within the country’s legal rights and is meant to threaten no one.
Providing
comments on a meeting which was held last week, Iran’s Deputy of Foreign
Ministry in Legal Affairs said "Since the legal order of the Caspian Sea has
been prevalent for 16 years, we would like to make changes to the workings so that
we could get results more quickly.”
He added "Our fleet in the Caspian Sea is growing in size. More than 602 Iranian merchant ships sail in the Caspian. We encourage private, tourist ships as well. Our first private dock is built in Astara. Before the revolution the Caspian Sea capacities were totally overlooked. But things are growing now.”
Akhondzadeh also said "If not more, Iran’s share is not less than the Russian Federation’s. According to considerations and 1921 and 1940 agreements which call the sea one of Iran and Russia with no borderlines and only a general suggestion, Iran’s share in the Caspian Sea is perfectly clear.”
