Chief of staff of Iranian Armed Forces congratulated Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari as Iran's new police commander.

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, in his capacity as Commander in Chief of the Iranian Law Enforcement forces, appointed Ashtari to the post on Monday.

He is replacing Esmail Ahmadi Moqaddam who served as police chief for about ten years.

Iran and the US severed ties after the victory of Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979.
