Tehran, YJC. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson says Iran has never asked for a place in the Geneva 2 talks.

The Spokeswoman of Iran’s Foreign Ministry Marzieh Afkham in reaction to UN uninviting the country to the Geneva 2 talks on Syria said "Iran has expressly stated its position on the Geneva 2, a position which has been reiterated in our officials’ meetings with Lakhdar Brahimi and the UN Secretary General. Mr. Zarif and Iran’s Ambassador to the UN have also expressed Iran’s stance that the country will not tolerate any preconditions if it is to attend the Geneva 2 talks.”

She asserted that uninviting Iran is regrettable, saying that the Secretary General of the UN has done so under pressure. "I wish he could explain his real reason for taking back the invitation,” she added.

Asked about reports that Iran may attend the conference in the sidelines, Afkham said "Iran will not consider attending the sidelines of the Geneva 2 conference. It also rejects any attendance at the expert level. There has not been anything like that.”
