خبرنگار علمی باشگاه خبرنگاران، سرس بعنوان یک سیاره کوتوله در سیستم خورشیدی ما طبقه بندی می شود. این اولین باری است که بخار آب به روشنی در سرس یا هر جسم دیگری که در کمربند سیارک است کشف می شود. در سال ۲۰۱۵ فضاپیمای سپیده دم ناسا به سرس می رسد و فرصت مطالعه آن را از نزدیک دارد و این مدتی طولانی را برای رسیدن آن به نزدیکی سرس صبر کنند. در قرن گذشته سرس بزرگترین سیارک شناخته شده در منظومه شمسی ما بود اما در سال ۲۰۰۶ سرس به دلیل قطر ۹۵۰ کیلومتری که اشت بعنوان یک سیاره کوتوله طبقه بندی شد. وقتی سرس در سال ۱۸۰۱ برای اولین بار کشف شد، ستاره شناسان فکر می کردند یک سیاره در حال چرخش بین مریخ و مشتری میباشد. دانشمندان بر این باورند که سنگ های داخل آن با پوشش ضخیمی از یخ هستند و اگر ذوب شوند به آب تازه ای که بیشتر از مقدار کل آب زمین است تبدیل می شوند .

موادی که سرس را ساخته اند به احتمال زیاد در چند میلیون سال اول منظومه شمسی وجود داشته اند و قبل از شکل گیری سیاره انباشته شده اند. تا به حال استدال شده بود که یخ بر روی سرس وجود دارد ولی بطور قطعی تشخیص داده نشده بود و اشعه مادون قرمز هرشل در نهایت بطور واضح سیگنال هایی از موجود بخار آب را تشخیص داد، ولی هرشل بخار آب را هیچ وقت ندید.
اما تلسکوپ چهار بار وجود بخار آب را در جایی که قبلا اثری از آن وجود نداشت تشخیص داد. در اینجا بود که دانشمندان متوجه شدند زمانی که سرس در بخشی از مدار خود نوسان داشت و به خورشید نزدیک تر بود به حد کافی گرم شد و بخار آبی به اندازه شش کیلومتر در هر ثانیه از آن رها شد. زمانی که سرس در قسمت های سردتر از مدار چرخشش قرار داشت هیچ بخار آبی از آن رها نشده است .
استحکام سیگنالها در چند ساعت متفاوت بود هفته ها و ماه ها شاید بخار آب در محدوده بیرون از دید هرشل حول محور متفاوت می چرخید. این دانشمندان را قادر ساخت که مکان منبع آب را بین دو نقطه تاریک سطح سرس را که اخیرا توسط تلسکوپ هابل مشاهده شد تشخیص دهند. نقاط تاریک ممکن است بیشتر به خروج گازها شباهت داشته باشند زیرا مواد بطور سریع گرم می شوند و نور آن ماده را ساطع می کنند .
نتایج بدست آمده غیر منتظره هستند، زیرا عموما دنباله دارها حاوی یخ هستند و در مسیر این سیارک قرار ندارند. این مساله بسیار مبهم است که در یک سیارک بخار آب کشف شده است. همچنین برنامه تحقیقاتی ناسا، شامل مشاهده و اندازه گیری و یازده دنباله دار بود .
