TEHRAN, Feb 06 - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reiterated the country’s unwavering support for Syria and said the Arab country’s security and stability is an important regional goal for the Islamic Republic.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Speaking at a Wednesday meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem in Tehran, President Rouhani described Iran-Syria ties as “brotherly and stronger than ever” and said the relationship will continue in line with the interests of both nations.
“One of the important regional and foreign policy goals of the Islamic Republic of Iran is the stability and complete security of Syria… and the return of the people of this country to their normal lives,” he stated.
Rouhani further expressed his congratulations on the Syrian nation’s achievements in the campaign against terrorism and said there is no doubt that the Arab country’s victory in the face of a great conspiracy led by the US is a victory for the entire region.
Muallem, for his part, congratulated Iran on the 40th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution and expressed his gratitude for the country’s moves to support Syria in the fight against terrorism.
Conflict erupted in Syria back in 2011, when a small group of opposition forces took up arms against Damascus.
Soon, however, a mix of international terrorists and paid mercenaries mingled with and then largely sidestepped the armed Syrian opposition groups, effectively turning the Arab country into a battlefield for foreign governments opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
But the Syrian military, with advisory military help from Iran and Russia — and a Russian aerial bombardment campaign — has retaken control of much of the country, and the conflict is generally believed to be winding down.
